Guess
what! Another baby sea lion.
The
mothers often go out to get food and leave their babies alone
on the beach. Occasionally the mothers get eaten by sharks, or
don't come back for some reason, in which case, the baby dies
because sea lions will not care for another sea lion's offspring.
So
we would often see really small babies left alone and our guide
Manuel would sometimes say, "Oh, that baby looks like he
is abandoned."
I
finally said to him, "You know, I really DON'T want to know
when you see an abandoned baby. It's just depressing. Especially
since I can't save it and take it home in my backpack. Just tell
us its mother is coming back." It got to the point where
we would see the skeleton of a baby seal on the beach and Manuel
would smile and say, "Don't worry, his mother is coming back..."
A smashed bird egg. "Don't worry, his mother is coming back..."
