The girls were the first to go across. I was pulled across the lake in an empty sled trailer behind one of the "machines." That was my first experience of sledding across a frozen lake. I can easily recall the feeling of bits of ice stinging my face as the "machine" sped me across the lake into the darkness. I remember seeing the first glimpse of light across the darkness as we approached the island on which lay Lakeland Hunting Lodge.
