The highlight of the trip: as we passed midtown, a light rain started. John noticed a full rainbow over the Empire State Building. Beautiful!

A funny story: As we were taking the rainbow photos in a pier, a New Jersey ferry boat was trying to get out and apparently thought we were in the way. The Coast Guard was in the vicinity and the captain of the ferry called them to complain.  The Coast Guard came up to us and one of the officers told us to be careful, that the ferry captain had called and said we were blocking the ferry. He was quite nice about it. Then another officer looked at me and said, "Is that a Chesapeake?" I said, "Yes! An LT 16." He said, "It's beautiful! I have one in pieces in my garage. Haven't put it together yet."

I have discovered an entire world I never knew existed through this kayak project and through the internet listserve email lists and the wonderful people I've met through them.

We couldn't make it to Liberty Island because of the wind, the waves and the time - and the fact that my upper body strength, while rapidly improving, leaves much to be desired. The wind and waves died down as we headed home and we got back to the boat basin after sunset. We successfully dismantled their kayak in the dark - in the gorgeous, though biting cold night.
