The sights we saw were breathtaking. You don't see snow like that
where I came from. As we rode along, we would occasionally stop
at the bottom of a hill and allow all of the sleds to catch up.
It was during those restful stops that we all would take an opportunity
to sip a drink of water or snap a photo of our surroundings or each
other. Then once the sleds in the rear caught up we would all give
the dogs the signal to "mush" or "hike" up the hill. A simple "hike!"
and a shove on the sled were signal enough to let the dogs know
that they were to begin pulling up the hill.
We would always step off the sleds as the dogs pulled up the hills,
then jumped back on when we reached the pinnacle. Once we started
down the other side we had to make sure we had a good grip on the
handle and one foot on the brake. The sled would sometimes overtake
the dogs on a downhill run so you had to make sure you kept the
lead rope tight by applying the brake.
